Mental Attitude: Taking care of you – great ways to self nurture: 1.) Take a long, hot bath.  2.) Spend time with your pets.   Terri Marshall

Health Alert: Epidemic of breathing disorder?  Asthma is the most common chronic disorder in children.  It affects an estimated 6.5 million kids.  CDC, 2005

Diet: Reduce obesity in US by 20%?  A ban on fast foods ads in the US could reduce the number of overweight children by 18% and lower the number of overweight adolescents ages 12-18 by 14%.  Should the US pursue this, they would follow Norway and Finland, as the only countries to have banned commercial sponsorship of children’s programs.  Research shows an 80% chance an overweight adolescent will be an obese adult.  Over 300,000 deaths are attributed to obesity and weight in the US every year.  Journal of Law & Economics, November 2008.

Exercise: How to start an exercise program: A recent study showed when adults with chronic illnesses were given behavior-changing strategies, they significantly increased their activity levels.  When they were given information intended to change their knowledge and beliefs about exercise, they did not increase their activity level.  Here are 2 tips:  1.  Set specific, managable goals.  For example, plan to exercise for 20 minutes, three times a week.  Don’t forget to track your progress by writing it down.  2.  Use a variety of daily reminders.  Schedule your exercise sessions on your calender like any other appointment.   Elaine Magee, MPH, RD

Chiropractic: Myth: Always sit up straight to prevent back pain?  Yes, constant slouching is bad for your back, but sitting too up straight and/or too still for a long period of time can also be bad.  Your back needs to move so mucles will not tighten and the disks of your spine stay hydrated.  If you sit a lot, try this a few times a day to help avoid back pain; Slouch into your chair and then sit-up straight, sway back and forth between these two positions 5-10 times, then repeat this several times through out the day.  Marcus Strutz, DC

Wellness/ Prevention: 3 Natural ways to reduce inflammation:  1.  Stop smoking.  Smoking hardens arteries and increases inflammation.  Research shows you can reverse the damaging effects to your arteries within 10 years of quitting.  2.  Mediterranean-style diet rich in omega-3 fats; (fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil.)  3.  Exercise lowers inflammation without any of the side effects associated with medications.  US News & World Report, November 2008
